European and National Quality Assurance Schemes

Many UK manufacturers are considering seeking a CE Mark for their products. A CE Mark can be awarded for a product once the harmonised European Standard relevant to that product has been issued. For fabricated steelwork, the relevant standard is BS EN1090-1 and it will be available in the near future.

The route to a CE mark involves a factory production control system which must be certified by an independent organisation, known as a Nominated Body. Generally, there will also be technical work to demonstrate that designs comply with the Eurocodes. This may involve tests in accordance with the new standards and test results will need a reliability analysis in accordance with new Eurocode procedures.

SCI’s role in CE Marking is to support manufacturers in demonstrating compliant design, taking account of relevant test programmes and statistical analysis where necessary. SCI are working with Notified Bodies to support UK manufacturers with the technical aspects of their assessment.

There are a number of other national quality assurance schemes, such as BM-Trada’s Q-Mark, and NHBC Standards Chapter 6.10. SCI can provide technical support to assist manufacturers and suppliers meet such standards.
